Italy's 50 Best Pizzerias

50 Top Pizza Announces Italy’s 50 Best Pizzerias

If you’ve ever dreamed of touring Italy and trying its best pizzas, this is the list for you. Back in June, representatives for 50 Top Pizza, a new online pizza guide featuring some 500 pizzerias, gathered at Manhattan’s Ribalta, to release its 2017 International Pizza Rankings. Those special 50 spots outside pizza’s birthplace have now been followed by the guide’s picks for the 50 best pizzerias in Italy.

The awards, which were determined by 100 inspectors who judged the pizzerias on quality, service, wine and beer lists, “research,” and décor were announced at the Castel dell’Ovo in Naples. The list was published by Formamentis and financed by a number of sponsors including Caputo Flour, Olitalia, Così Com’è and Consorzio Tutela Mozzarella di Bufala Campana. And it was orchestrated by wine journalist Luciano Pignataro (Luciano Pignataro Wine Blog), long-time sommelier Barbara Guerra, and master taster of cheeses and olive oil, Albert Sapere.

“Ultimately, Pepe in Grani, a pizzeria 45 minutes north of Naples in Caiazzo, a city in the province of Caserta, was voted Italy’s best pizzeria for 2017.”

Nineteen of the 50 spots are located in Campania, which the guide noted confirms “the natural leadership the birthplace of pizza continues to exert.” But the entire Italian peninsula was represented. Latium scored six spots (three of them — Sforno, Tonda, and Sbanco — under the imprimatur of Stefano Callegari), Tuscany five, then Lombardy and Emilia Romagna with four each. After that, a bunch of regions —Apulia, Sicily, Abruzzo, Trentino Alto Adige, and Veneto — each took two apiece. Veneto’s two pizzerias just happened to both be in the top 10. Piedmont and Basilicata each also scored a spot.

Ultimately, Pepe in Grani (there’s always a Pepe, huh?), a pizzeria 45 minutes north of Naples in Caiazzo, a city in the province of Caserta, was voted Italy’s best pizzeria for 2017. Along with the full list below, the guide published a number of awards and distinctions. So there you have it… if you’re looking for your marching orders when it comes to the best pizza in Italy, this would seem like a great place to start.
