I’ve worked on numerous pizza lists over the years, each with its own challenges when it comes to ranking. But coming up with a list of New York City’s best pizzas by price for First We Feast? Well, this one was a doozy. It may also be one of the more interesting and difficult pizza lists I’ve worked on.
First We Feast’s “The Best Pizza in NYC for Every Budget” takes a look at the single best slice or pie at every price point, from 99¢ to $30. There were a few reasons why that’s a bit of a challenge. Pizza has several price sweet spots.
“Finding New York City’s best pizza by price in the pizza desserts outside these price points and determining the best ones within the crowded fields are both pretty difficult — determining the best pies between $2 to $3, $8 to $9, and $10 to $12, particularly so.”
You have your dollar slices, you have the slices sold at or around the pizza principle (wherein a slice costs the same as a subway ride), and you have the $13 to $20 window that includes Neapolitan pies, chain pizzas, and New York City-style pies. Then there are the more expensive pies and pies with toppings in the $21 to $30 swath.
Finding New York City’s best pizza by price in the pizza desserts outside these price points and determining the best ones within the crowded fields are both pretty difficult — determining the best pies between $2 to $3, $8 to $9, and $10 to $12, particularly so.
Also, you may be surprised to know that pizzerias change their prices with a pretty high frequency. Some places move them back an forth due to the price fluctuation of ingredients.
Check out the five top slices and pies at either end of the spectrum:
